Bury School Bees

Bury School Bees

Miss Willett and Mr Gatrell are our resident bee keepers and have been keeping bees at Bury School since 2020.

The children wear their own bee keeping suits and are fully involved in inspections, colony management and honey extraction. Once extracted, the honey is shared across the school for all to enjoy!

We have one hive which is inspected weekly by the children and Miss Willett and Mr Gatrell during bee keeping club.

Bee club is on a Thursday after school 3:15-4:30 and runs in the first half of the autumn term and the whole of the summer term.

We are delighted to announce that, in recognition of the work we do with our honeybees and other pollinators, we have achieved the 'Friends of the Honeybee' status by the British Beekeeper's Association. 'Friends of the Honey Bee' is a BBKA initiative aimed at reaching out to schools and other community groups to encourage them to become more bee friendly and aware of the importance of all pollinators. Part of this initiative provides a termly newsletter from the BBKA, in which we will soon feature - so keep a look out for that.
